Digitizing Microfilm Virginia Freedmen Project

Last year Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine said that he would to update Virginia's initiative to compile the records of black Virginians whose family history was affected by slavery and racism electronically.

The Virginia Freedmen Project already has collected microfilm from the United States National Archives and digitized them to make genealogical records more accessible to African-American families. The center has worked with volunteers to take the National Archives materials and making them available electronically.

It could be argued that Virginia should have requested a budget from the federal government for microfilm conversion. The Virginia Freedman Project should not have been left up to volunteers if time frame and technology were concerns. Scanning Depot would have transferred the film to digital images quickly for an inexpensive cost and set up a retrieval system for them.
