Is tiff Best for Microfilm Scanning?

One question we get a lot is which file format output is best for microfilm scanning: TIFF, PDF, JPEG, plus their variations, compressions, and colors.

The truth is: it all depends on what use the digital images have for you, so there is no straight blanket answer to "Is TIFF best for microfilm scanning".. If you are just concerned about reading images on your computer screen with a free image viewer, any format will do. If quality is an issue, perhaps a higher DPI or greyscale will be more beneficial.

PDFs require a PDF reader, such as Adobe or FoxIt. Generally speaking, filesize of images increases when scanning at grayscale.

We will be more than happy to assist you with any questions about which file type is best for you, and to prepare the details of your next conversion project. Please contact us at your earliest convenience.
